Diving in California is different from most resort settings. To begin with you are on your own. Unless you make special arrangements in advance with the shop, there will (generally) be no divemaster to lead your dive on a boat. In addition, although you may have already planned for this, you will need a substantial wetsuit and you will need a hood and gloves. If you don't have experience with the extra gear, try to get a chance to use it in the pool first. There will be people along with recommendations, but one option is to take a boat to Avalon on Catalina Island and dive at Casino Point. This will be a mellow introduction to California diving. Scuba Luv in Avalon has instructor guided shore dives.
