Diving Catalina With The Sea Divers 04/01/2006

I absolutely love getting emails about good dives from my buddys... seahunt.

Hi Mike,

I just wanted to drop you a note about Saturday’s trip out to Farnsworth.

Wow! What a place. The anchor was in about 75 feet on the top of a pinnacle and all the diving
was below that. There is an enormous amount of filter life on that seamount.

I was a little dismayed though that there was not more fish. It seems there should have been some
monster lings along with many other assorted rockfish along with clouds of blues hanging in the
water column, but nothing like that.

I tried something completely new with my Nikonos. I put an extension tube between the body and a
20 mm lens with no framer to gauge distance. The close ups are the ones I shot with this set up and
these are the only ones in focus enough to be worth looking at. Their still not that sharp, but I
know how I can make it work, I need to put it right on the subject about 3 inches away and I’d have
it. I wanted something that I could get some lingcod portraits that are right up in your face and
still be able to get the whole subject. The lings are arrogant enough they’ll just stand their ground
and dare you. With out the framer I can get these shots.

The other shots are typical Catalina stuff in a kelp forest. The only thing that makes them special
is that it was my first trip there. All the color shots are Fuji 200 print film, and the B/W is that
new Kodak C-24 process black and white film that you can develop the same way as regular color print
film. It seems to have good grain and contrast and gives me good grays.

See ya,

Eric
