If you're in Studio City, you might want to check out the Hollywood Divers shop (hollywoodivers.com) - they're a great group to dive with. If you're looking for more of a club, there are dive clubs scattered all over the place up here. I do a lot with the Sole Searchers, which meets in Pasadena (solesearchersdiveclub.com), but I know there are also active clubs in Santa Clarita, Burbank, and I'm sure a little further to the west as well. Just drop by a few meetings of different clubs, and see which one has a vibe that works for you.

As for how we afford it - well, diving is why my husband and I haven't yet settled down to a house and kids! (Ok, diving plus the insane real estate costs out here)
