With few exceptions, even the most inexpensive slid scanners have a focal point dithering mode in the preferences. That is where you will make the optic pick-up focal center correction for the slide frame tolerance differences. The higher end scanners, like the top end Canon or Minolta's, perform this correction automatically per slide scan with the same technology used for auto-eye focusing on SLRs.
