The best place to stay in Arenal is the Observitory Lodge. When I go back, that is where I will stay. Eric & Angie of the Peace just went there recently and loved it.

When I was there I stayed at Tabacon. It was crowded and over huyped, I will never stay there again. You do not need to stay there to spend a day at the Springs.
If you are going on the red eye, it is best to reserve the room for the day before so you don't have to wait for checkout time time.
I was very happy staying at the Gran del Oro when I was in San Jose.
