They can be lighter. If you get a SS backplate it will be heavier, which means you can remove weight from your weightbelt. With my drysuit and a single tank I've got 13 pounds on my weightbelt.

For local diving I use a SS plate.
For warm water I use AL.
DSS sells a lightweight plate made out of a plastic called Kydex, which is great for travel. My girlfriend has one of those.
