An instructor can instruct, but a divemaster cannot. For some agencies there is also an Assistant Instructor, that is midway between the two. Also, keep in mind that a Divemaster cert is not the same as a Master Diver cert. In the LA County system there is no Divemaster cert - there are only the Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Instructor certs. To give a taste, the training for the LA County Advanced (via the ADP http://lascuba.com/adp.html) fulfills all the requirements for the NAUI AOW, Rescue and Master Diver certs. So the meaning of the certs really depends on the agency. Confused yet? ;) Ray
