Some additional comments on Ross' answers:

2. There are cabs that run back and forth as well, generally $11 per group. So of the cab takes two small groups, that's $11 for each group. Keep that in mind, and 'form a group' before talking to a cab driver. ;)

3. I'm not aware of any camping near Avalon, but there might be some. I usually stay in the Hermosa Hotel i their cheapest rooms. No heat or TV, and bathroom down the hall, but at 1/4 the price of other places I don't complain.

For gear storage, there are lockers near the casino, but they might be full and don't all work. There are also lockers near the boat landing which are in beter shape, but that means a cab ride back.

Some hotels have gear storage rooms that can be used as well, if you're staying there.
