This was his response: "Well, the spotting point is valid but I believe it refers more to the body of the eel than the face. I think the flash and contrast in the picture bring those out more than they actually appear on the fish. I have seen yellow snake eels with spots on the face and it is really common in the family. Playing the odds, O. zophochir are waaay more abundant in southern California than O. triserialis. But.... you'll never know 100% without the fish in hand." John
