Since I always just drive there, I don't have personal experience. I've always liked the look of "The Coast" and its in a nice area (more or less by itself near the Queen Mary). My perception of 'downtown' is that there are beautiful, upscale hotels within blocks of decent looking middle tier places, then a couple more blocks and I'd keep my car doors locked!

Might try the Courtyard by Mariott downtown or the Holiday Inn near the LB airport. If you're looking at low price, maybe the Vagabond in San Pedro. Some may find San Pedro 'iffy' - just take your stuff to your room at night.
