Posted by Chris on June 04, 2006 at 11:44:39: Kathryn and I boarded the Great Escape on Friday evening and then went out to dinner at Geroge’s Greek Deli on Pine Avenue for the Friday night lamb special. We came back for set up our gear and went to bed for the 1AM departure. When we woke in the morning we found ourselves at Torqua Springs, Catalina. The visibility was pretty good at about 40 ft, and the water was 56°F. I spent most of the dive taking macro shots and was not prepared for the pair of pair of Giant Black Sea Bass that swam 3 feet from us, and just behind another pair of divers who never saw them. Our next two dives were at the Old Rock Quarry. There were many Garibaldi nests. I took some close-ups of the fresh eggs in one of them. I skipped the day dive at Elaine’s favorite dive site, near the Green Buoy at Isthmus Reef. However I went on the night dive and got some interesting pictures of sleeping Sheephead and Blacksmith. Their colors change while they sleep. The Sheephead remind me of Parrot Fish and the Blacksmith reminds me of Blue Tangs in tropical waters. On Saturday morning our first two dives were at Ship Rock. After the second dive the wind started to pick up and Captain Tim headed for the backside where it was much calmer than on the front. We did a dive at Whale Rock, and then in Cat Harbor where we spent the night. On Sunday our first dive was at Farnsworth. There was a plankton layer, but the visibility at depth was 50 feet+. We then went around to the Front side to Black Rock. I took a series of pictures of a Green abalone that did a 180 on the rock while I took pictures. I also saw many small hermit crabs. The last dive of the trip was at Arrow point. Again there were many hermit crabs, and I encountered a small Moray being cleaned by shrimp at the end of the dive.
