The original prototype was flat but I found that the plate allowed the tank to fit so close to my body that it felt like I was tied to a telephone pole or had a back/body splint on.
The tank rode on my butt and on my upper back between my shoulder blades and if I tightened down the waist strap it tried to straighten out my spine into an unnatural position.
So I placed the tab in there and now it moves the bottom of the plate forward so that the plate has contact and hugs your whole back and gives the tank just enough clearance so it doesn't constantly bump you in the butt. Make sense?
This plate is WAY more comfortable than any conventional plate and is the most streamlined of any modern plate.
