Simple (less chance for something to go wrong); streamlined (minimal added drag which improves air consumption rates); mobility (easier to remove UW and less likely to snag on kelp or rocks); flexible (add / remove rings or pockets as needed).

Other benefits: easier to clean, possibly much lighter (depending on plate used), less expensive in the longer term (long life).
