Oh yah, along the shore we can get a murk to beat the band. There is almost always some decent vis to be found at the islands somewhere, say 20 feet even if you have to look for it. The shore is another thing, especially in spring. Swim out 100 yards or so before going down hoping it will get better. Forget it, you would need a mile or so to find vis. Blackout is blackout. Brownout is the same too. Malibu gank was 3 feet or less, but it was divable. It can be fantastic though. In winter when the Santanas blow, watch the water temp. If it drops 4 or 5 degrees, it means there was a cold upwelling and vis can be over 100 feet.
