Actually, I've been told that welding gas requires higher even purity than breathing gas. You can survive on >16 percent O2 (as long as the other gases are inert) but impurities can ruin a weld.

As others have said all the gas comes from the same place so go figure.

BTW I'm not a welder, but I do buy welding gas ;-)
