I took these photos on Saturday June 17, 2006 in a kelp bed at Santa Barbara Island about 2000 yards NW of Webster Point. The depth was 55 ft.
I have never before seen a flatfish in California with this coloration. It does not match any of the descriptions I have in several books. The closest match I can find is a Spotted Turbot (Pleuronichthys ritteri). A Horny Head Turbot is also close, but not a perfect match.
What do you think it is?
