Last December I was paddling my surf kayak up from Campbells Cove in a blanket of thick fog. An eerie, dark day, calm, quiet, nobody but me. I had just lugged my yak over the breakwall (saves time rather than going around), and was in about three feet of water, when a HUGE elephane seal reared up and opened it's mouth about five inches from my left ear. He let out a lound hissssss, then went back down - I think I had accidentally hit him with my paddle. Let me tell you, the usuall twenty minuted paddle up to the head took about five minutes! I swear, I looked right down his throat. The good news is, the waves were good & another chap joined me for the rest of the afternoon. Ah, the lab. Busted by the director back in 1995 for surfing there. Actually though, he was a reasonable guy & after a little scolding, we enjoyed a nice chat. Still a little pirate blood in me I guess.
