Ah, my friend. Do not underestimate the California northeasterlies. The prevailing NW down there (channel is.) caps out around 35, and has gusted to 50 kts, but the NE has no cap - it has, I believe, hit 100 kts on the buoys. I was on a 50' steel fishing boat on the backside of Clemente in '96 - our anchor line busted in the middle of the night & we had to beat into it all the way to Pedro (12 hrs). It was terrible - fortunately it was a stout boat with small, strong portholes. In 1985, the Arguello, a 40' boat was lost in a NE in the SB channel. Two men perished, nothing found, not even a scrap of wood.

Be careful out there.
