On July 3-4, 2006 my girlfriend Kathryn and I went on the Peace Scuba trip to Catalina Island and Santa Barbara Island aboard the Peace.

We started the day, July 3, 2006, with 2 dives at Ship Rock. The visibility was about 30 feet. There was absolutely no current, even on the outside end where the current usually is ripping.
I concentrated on macro photography on both dives.
On the second dive Kathryn found a Okenia rosacea; formerly Hopkinsia rosacea (Hopkin's Rose) which I got some very nice shots of.
On dive 3 we moved to Eagle Reef and I found a large Two Spot Octopus (Octopus bimaculatus; formerlyOctopus bimaculoides). While on the anchor line I got a couple of shots of Steve Sanford and Jessica Merritt.
For our fourth dive we went to Arrow Point. Kathryn found a very large Orange Sponge.
For our fifth dive we dove at Eel Point, on the inside of Eagle Reef. Instead of going to the reef I spent my time in the muck. I found several Mantis Shrimp (Hemisquilla ensigera californiensis) holes, but only managed to see one Mantis Shrimp barley poking his head out of the hole.
That evening while people made the night dive at the same spot we could see the fireworks show at the isthmus.

On morning of July 4, 2006 we did out first dive on the inside of Sutil Island at Santa Barbara Island. I got a good shot of Encrusting hydrocoral (Stylantheca porphyra), a Club-Tipped Anemone (Corynactis california) with parasitic growth inside it, and a Swell shark egg that Kathryn pointed out for me.
On the second dive at the kelp bed outside Webster Point I got the best pictures of Pusula solandri; formerly Trivia solandri I have ever taken.
For our third we went to the rookery. Interestingly there were hardly any sealions in the green water with us. Perhaps they knew something was there that we did not see. Kathryn pointed out a Pacific Angel Shark (Squatina californica) laying in the sand I took a series of pictures of. Then near the end of the dive mid sized (about 250 lbs.) Giant Black Sea Bass (Stereolepis gigas) came by to check us out and circled us repeatedly.

On the way home a Western Gull (Larus occidentalis) decided to hitch a ride back to Ventura with us.
