If you're driving up the coast, definitely take the time to check out Piedra Blancas beach -- just north of San Simeon -- to see if the elephant seals are in residence. I'm not sure if this is the right time of year, but it's worth checking.

The beaches are now fenced off, so you can look but not touch (not that you'd want to...) The first time I was there, there were no fences and yahoos were slapping the seals and then running away. I'm only sorry that they didn't get caught by 2,000lbs of mean blubber with 6-inch teeth.
