Diving in Maui is VERY expensive, along the lines of $150 for 2 tanks. (At least when I was there last). I dove with B&B Scuba (http://www.bbscuba.com/) while I was there. They were nice, and it looks like they dropped there price $109. You might just want to make one boat trip, (Molokini is a nice dive). Then just rent some tanks, and a float (yes, I was told you can be ticketed for not beach diving with a float) and hit the beach.
