Best "quick" dive in SoCal?

I am new to the area and really expected to get out diving at least a couple of times a month. So far, I have been out only once because of the time commitment. It seems that the only practical dive from Ventura/Oxnard is a very full day trip to the Channel Islands.

Are there dives that can be done in half a day in the Ventura County area? I suppose Santa Barbara or LA counties are possibilities as well since dribing is so much faster than hoping the boat to Santa Cruz Island.

Shore dives are the obvious option but everyone I have talked to in this area say the shore dives aren't worth the trouble due to poor vis and little to see even if the vis was good.

Thanks for any suggestions. I need to get wet but I just can't take all day to do it.
