LOS ANGELES, August 17, 2006 - The body of a missing diver has been found near the south end of the Los Angeles Channel where he was diving, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The name of the 40-year-old man is being withheld, pending notification of his relatives, says U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Nathan Henise.

The diver was reported missing 3 1/2 miles outside the breakwater at 2:12 p.m. Wednesday.

Wednesday's search was called off at about 6 p.m. because "of deteriorating conditions, poor visibility and fast currents," said county fire Capt. Mark Savage, but resumed Thursday morning at 7 a.m.

County and city firefighters, as well as personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard, Baywatch and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, participated in the search.

The missing diver was on a recreational dive off a 50-foot fishing boat, the San Pedro-based Salty Five, which had been customized for diving. The destination of the dive was the wreckage of a boat known to area divers, Savage said.

The Coast Guard will conduct an investigation into the diver's disappearance, said Henise.
