Yes they work well, however you need to have a good idea of where you are and which direction you went if you swim out of range. They are especially helpful in low visibility when it is hard to use landmarks or swimming back in the green with no visible landmarks. In this situation you can check to see if you have moved due to currents.
The best system is the scout receiver and the sport transmitter. It gives you much more range.
You have to be careful in underwater terrain with many pinnacles that you are not getting a reflections.
To use it you pan and look for the arc of high signal strength. The center of that are is the direction of the transmitter.
