I strive to show sea life as it really exists in my photos, not for artistic merit. However I still like the photos to look good. I strive to make the photos look good to myself, and if other like them that is a bonus.
I do make correction to color, exposure, focus (with focus magic), and shadows. I also sometimes even attempt to remove backscatter if does not alter the picture in any significant manner.
However if your personal goal is a work of art, not a realistic depiction of what happened then I have no problem with modifications like the one you made.
