The eye structure on the end of the arm of Pisaster giganteus (Giant Spined Star)

Last week Gordon Hendler, the Curator of Echinoderms at The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was here reviewing some of my underwater photographs with me. He pointed out that this picture shows the photo receptor structure (or "eye") on the end of the leg of a Giant Spined Star (Pisaster giganteus).
I for one found this quite interesting because I was unaware the sea stars had any form of eye.
