It would be an improvement because it would make finding unread
posts easier when they come in a mess of already read posts (like
on the second page of posts).

It's usually the unread that gets emphasized. Thunderbird,
Outlook Express, Lotus Notes all emphasize the unread in some
way (color, bold, etc).
