I've had good luck putting 2-3" of ice in a cooler, then putting a small oven aluminum roster thingy (those $2 disposable ones at the supermarket) on top of the ice to prevent the bugs from getting wet with fresh water as the ice melts.

I kept a nice sized strong bug alive for 3 days :o
