There are different ways to handl scallops. One is to carry a small stick about the size of a paint stirrer doubled. Put it into the scallop before it can close. Use your knofe to cut the meat out. Actually in the Malibu area scallops can usually be broken loose with a small iron.
Have fun in the South Pacific. It should be beautiful diving.
