Tim - perhaps a letter to that instructor's agency (PADI) and store would be in order? An instructor who would make fun of a roll call is not someone who should be teaching. They should at least be reprimanded.

The DM should be commended for doing his or her job - a visual roll call is a necessary safety step before leaving a site.
