Not sure what it's like now but you should definitely plan on a night dive with the Manta rays. I recommend Jack's Diving Locker for that trip. It's the only one you have to do with a boat. All the other best diving spots in Kona can be reached via the shore. Old Airport is great - there are a couple of swim-throughs and it can be a nice long dive since it's so shallow. The Place of Refuge is awesome (http://www.letsgo-hawaii.com/honaunau/) and I highly recommend it. If you swim out far enough the coral ledge drops dramatically to about a 100 feet and the visibility is insane.
