Dive Reoprt: CortesBank & Santa Barbara Island on the Peace |
Posted by Chris on November 04, 2006 at 14:30:16: This year's Dr. Death Invitational on the Peace was on Tuesday and Wednesday October 10-11, 2006. This year we licked out with light Santana winds and sea was flat calm for the whole trip. We left Ventura at 10PM on Monday night. Our first day at Cortes Bank produced bugs on every dive, but no monsters. Most people came back to the boat with one or two on each dive. However one pair of divers found a "glory hole" in the afternoon and came back with a bag full. On the second day we went to Santa Barbara Island because the Navy had closed San Nic. On the first dive at Santa Barbara Island a few divers went into the boilers between Webster point and Sutil Island. All who did came out with nice bugs. On our last two dives we worked the moonscapes outside the boilers. The current was ripping, but many nice bugs came up from this area. I got a 6 lb. female and the winner for the day (and biggest) was an 8½ lb. male caught by Mike Smith. At the end of the day many of the divers released their largest bugs.
