The origins of “official” place names can be found in publications such as “California Place Names – The Origin and Etymology of Current Geographical Names,” Gudde, Erwin, G and “Place-Names of Greater Los Angeles” Durham, David L.

Example: Portuguese Bend [Los Angeles Co.]. The name was applied for Joseph Clark (Machado), a native of the Azores, who owned a fleet of whalers around 1860.

These books can be found in most libraries and can be purchased at most the larger bookstore chains

Good hunting
