Personally, I don't care if the deck hand, the divemaster, the Captain or the cook came by and "secured" my gear; as far as I'm concerned, I am the only one responsible for stowing MY gear and making sure MY things are on board and are where they won't get damaged or lost until I need them. What can I say? I have a very close relationship with my gear, so I may tend to be a little over-protective. Of course, it's still the ocean, which means unforeseeable accidents can happen despite anyone's best efforts -- and that's just the price of participation in an activity such as the one we've chosen.

Just my opinion.
