Hi Elaine -

These are amphipods, Chromopleustes lineatus. They must be full of some sort of noxious chemicals because they're both colorful and out & about in the open. Most pods aren't so obvious because they're hiding from predators. C. lineatus has been found on a variety of substrates but they seem to have an affinity for echinoderms. I've seen Asterina miniata that were black with these guys and I notice they're really clustering on the cuke in your picture.
