I recently did the 3/4 day trip on the Spectre to Anacapa as I wanted a quick dive in good vis and I want to change my MO from beach to boat diving. I seldom dive boats so I understand your concerns. You can't board the night before, but you can dive without a buddy. These boat trips cater to students so the diving is not advanced but you still see much. I enjoyed my trip and there were several other experienced divers doing the same thing as me.
