Having dove with the Spectre quite regularly for the last five years, I would have to correct the previous poster. You CAN board the night before, it is common practice for people from the central valley and those from down south. The diving is conservative but if you're on your first few trips to Anacapa, that'll be more than enough to give you a great picture of what a Marine Reserve can do for the local populations. Enjoy your trip and enjoy the local rookery it's busting at the seams lately with pups.
