Regulator Newbie

I am a new diver and trying to buy a regulator for local California diving and the occasional trips to the tropics. It appears every dive shop has their own opinions and I just get more confused. I have heard that a Sherwood Oasis is a very basic, bullet proof reg. Another dive shop told me Sherwood was no good and to go with Scuba Pro. Yet other online reviews suggest even more brands. So If I want a quality, moderately priced reg that will last a long time; any suggestions???
