How are you guys determining vis?

I know this seems like a stupid topic but what is the norm for guaging vis:

1) where an object just starts to become obscured.
2) The object is sort of obscured, about medium.
3) The object is almost completely obscured about 3/4 way.
4) The object is barely visible but still identifiable. If it was any further it would be gone.

I'm curious to see if there is a standard so if someone tell me, "Oh yah, the vis was great, about 30 feet", I want to know if that's still visible or barely visible.
