Thanks to JimL for alerting me to this little beauty.

Walter was right - it's a flatworm. Robert Todd (one of the Divebums posters) sent me a similar image a while ago just before I did some field work with a couple of flatworm specialists. They oohed & aahed over the worm then said it was in the family Prosthiostomidae but they had never seen it before. I don't know if it's rare or just living in an area not sampled by biologists.

Even if it were a nemertean it wouldn't be Cerebratulus californicus as that's very thick bodied and solid orange or red"
