I agree with you seahunt, the rigs should stay. The steel structure is for all practical purposes, inert to the environment. I am sure that the oil companies will remove all vestiges contamination before they christening it a "reef."

Any time the trawlers want something, you have to know that is will not be good for the environment. And it only takes one swipe with a trawl net to damage the bottom.

I think the oil companies should decontaminate the rigs and that they should be allowed to stay in perpetuity. Make a deal to allow the oil companies give a large percentage of the money they saved and to other important ocean enhancement projects like the MPLA's .
