You forgot to add that you can only take photographs of red abalone while freediving and you're only allowed to take 3 shots per day with a total annual photograph limit of 24 including the free days. You have to punch a card and god help you if you get caught taking a picture of an undersize ab or take a picture for someone else while U/W photographing.
Oh, and the rules are slightly different if you dive photograph from shore as opposed to boat based photography. There aren't as many restrictions. Check the regulation book
