I would call Glenn's Aquarius II right on the breakwater in Monterey.
They should have everything you need to rent and get in a dive.
The dive spot is right there. You park your bike in the lot, rent your gear, and walk from the dive shop right into the water. Going along the breakwall all the way out and back is a good dive. You can also go straight out from the beach and do a sand dive with a few rocks and a few anchors to look at, or if you walk down the beach a ways toward cannery row you can follow one of the old sewer lines out to the metridium fields in about 50 feet of water. It's all very easy calm diving. There will probably be in excess of 200 divers there so get there early.
