The red tide does seem to be patchy. After diagnosing a problem with my outboard that turned out to be a failed temperature sensor, we went for a sea trial today in the form of a freediving/snorkeling outing. The water alternated between red and green as we headed down the Palos Verdes coast. The Honeymoon-Christmas Tree-Neptune's stretch and Marineland-Portuguese Bend looked like root beer. So we anchored next to Whale Rock at Pt. Vicente and checked that out for a while. After that we headed a few miles offshore in hopes of finding a kelp paddy -- no such luck, though the water was better-looking. We ended up in the water again near Malaga. Vis was under 10 ft throughout, though. Highlight was a sighting of juvenile white sea bass at one of the spots.
