Katherine Gardner 230 6th St. Salinas, CA 93901 Re Case Number: CRMK081361A-EDear Ms. Gardner, The recreational diving community took drastic action more than ten years ago to arrest the pending extinction of wild abalone south of Marin County by demanding a moratorium be imposed south to Mexico. We sadly concede that the abalone population there will never recover in our lifetimes to the point where we will be able to harvest them again in the banned area. However, we do dream that the day will come when either our children, or grandchildren, will have that privilege. In the meantime, the DFG, and the courts have their hands full trying to impede the proliferation of abalone poachers. It’s a real tragedy that these crimes are still considered misdemeanors. The perpetrators steal more than just the resource; they are stealing the dreams of countless, law-abiding citizens. It is my fervent hope that your office prosecutes to the fullest extent of the law these criminals for what they are—common thieves. Sincerely yours,
