cruise ship diving

I am going on a Royal Caribbean cruise early next year to the Caribbean. We are going to be hitting

San Juan, Puerto Rico;
Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas;
St. Johns, Antigua;
Philipsburg, St. Maarten;
Nassau, Bahamas

I want to try to dive in at least 2 locations. I was curious to know if anyone has ever done any diving while cruising (in general or with Royal Caribbean)? If so, did you book a dive through the ship (which I hear you need to book very early which is why I am asking now) or go with a local company?

Has anyone every dived the above islands? Any thought on which might be the best islands to dive, and any local company on the island that is worth using. Lastly, what gear did you bring vs. rent.
