2007 Great Annual Fish Count with the Greater Los Angeles Council of Divers

The Greater Los Angeles Council of Divers (GLACD) is sponsoring three 2007 Great Annual Fish Count (GAFC) events this year.

The first two events are dives to take data on fish populations. Two dives are scheduled for the weekend of July 14 and 15. The first dive is in coordination with Dive N’Surf of Redondo Beach, and will take place at Malaga Cove, Palos Verdes Estates (Paseo Del Mar at Via Arroyo). The second dive will be at Old Marineland, Rancho Palos Verdes. Note that access to OML has changed, parking is limited so carpooling (perhaps from Point Vicente parking lot) is recommended. Access to OML: From the old gate go East on PV Drive about 1/4 mile to Seawolf Dr. turn Right, go to Beachview turn Right, go to Nantasket (turns left), follow Nantasket to the new lot at the end of Nantasket at Seacove Drive. Both events start at 9 am and will include a short refresher on fish identification and survey techniques and a briefing for the dive site. Participants need to bring all their own dive equipment and a slate suitable for data taking.

The third event is a lecture on the GAFC technique and how to identify the fish of Southern California: A Fish Identification lecture is scheduled for 1 pm on Saturday, July 14th at S.E.A. Lab. 1021 N. Harbor Drive, Redondo Beach. This event is FREE, but reservations would be appreciated. Please send an email to mail(at)glacd.org (don’t forget to replace “(at)” with the “@” symbol) if you plan on attending this event. This event is open to divers, snorklers, tide poolers, or anyone interested in learning how to identify the fish of Southern California.
