Crime at the resort wasn't really an issue. It's on it's own little island and there is a manned gate before the bridge to get across.

We found a deal through scuba voyages for under $700 for the week, all-inclusive with 3 boat dives a day.

The shark dive was $95/person.

There are bugs, I had good luck with Cutter Advanced, which uses picardin instead of DEET (which can damage synthetic clothes/equipment in high concetrations)

We also did a horseback riding excursion which was well worth the money.

And it doesn't hurt to ask for a newer room.
