Since you have no experience since certification I would recommend a trip to Catalina or Anacapa with a dive shop that is able to provide you with a personal DM. (DMs normally stay on board and do not guide you in California.)
Dive shops that might accommodate you include Sea d Sea & Ocean Safari. These shops can set you up with the wetsuit and gear you need and can probably arrange (for a fee) to get you a guide.
