On Friday and Saturday July 13-14, 2007 Kathryn and I went to Catalina and Santa Barbara Island aboard the Peace.
On Frday we we started with two dives at Ship Rock. There were many Octopus (Octopus bimaculatus) out and about on both dives. The water was a comfortable 63°F above 50 feet, but dropped to 53°F below. The interface of the thermal layers was very visible.
Our third dive was at the East end of the Old Rock Quarry. I got some nice photos of a Tylodina fungina there.
Dives four and five were at Little Geiger. I took some nice shots of Jack Mackerel (Trachurus symmetricus), a Warty Sea Cucumber (Parastichopus californicus) in the Kelp, and a Mantis Shrimp (Hemisquilla ensigera californiensis).
All of the sites had the sever thermocline and 50 ft. I passed on the night dive at Indian Rock.
The next morning our first two dives were at Sutil Island. Again there was the same 64°F to 53°F thermoclide at 50 ft. On the second dive Kathryn spotted a female Garibaldi (Hypsypops rubicundus) laying eggs. I got one shot before she finshed. As soon as she was done the male chassed her away.
Our last dive was at the Rookery. I got some nice pictures of a very tiny Limacia cockerelli and Disporella sp. (Purple Bryozoan) on the shell of a Lithopoma undosum (Wavy Turban Snail).
It was a nice trip with the usual great service from the Peace. The new chef Joe is very good. The dishes he cooks are different than the cooks who proceed him, but they are all wonderful, tasty, and well prepared.
